My goal and design intent for this project was to quickly sketch, build and supplement this piece for a nostalgic product while working on improving my craft.
A Personal Woodworking Project
Design Intent
After acquiring a record player I realized it needed a mindful place to reside. Working around the proportions and wood base gave me adequate foundation to kick off a new piece of furniture…
Construction
-
Consists of two pieces of walnut stock. One piece of sap walnut that is sandwiched together by two pieces of dark walnut. There is a preserved live edge on the outward front face of the tabletop creating a distinct orientation with some character. These are joined by wood biscuits.
-
All four legs are constructed with through mortise and tenons secured with two concealed joining dowels. The through tenons of red oak contrast the black walnut and provide a reveal from the feet of the record player when removed.
-
The shelf made from a lighter oak are not fixed to the dowels. This allows for the shelf to be detached when not in use or being moved. It was a playful decision and adds some multi-functional elements to the piece. Its joinery consist of a half-lap inverse round over that sits on both dowels and is nestled in-between all four legs by way of subtle cutouts.
-
Tabletop- Black Walnut, Sap Walnut
Legs- Red Oak
Shelf- Light Oak
Dowels- Poplar
Sustainability
All wood used to create this piece was either left over hardwood from other projects or scrap wood. Additionally, the construction methodology is a flat-pack approach with opportunity for simple hardware integration for user self-assembly if greater quantities were pursued in manufacturing. The wood finish used was walrus oil, a non-toxic and food-safe oil based furniture finish.
